College Basketball Predictions: Coastal Carolina (+10.5) vs. Old Dominion (-10.5) Over – Under 131.5
Old Dominion has been gaining respect has a mid major program for years now. They have been to back to back NCAA Tournaments and actually gave Butler, the team that made it the finals last yet, it’s toughest game of the tournament. This year the program came into the season knowing that it had work to do after losing Frank Hassel, the big man that lead the team in rebounding and points. They ended the season with a 20-13 record. The result is they are now in the College Insider Tournament, better known as the CIT.
.Old Dominion was not a bad team this season, they just weren’t great. Their only losses in conference were against the 3 best teams in the conference. It went 13-0 against the rest of the CAA. The CAA plays tough basketball. They produced VCU and Final Four team last year, and the produced the 1st ever Cinderella in George Mason in 2005. This is a basketball conference.
ODU wasn’t good enough to beat the best, but they were quite dominate over lesser teams. This is actually the basis for my reasoning today. Old Dominion has no problems beating up on teams it’s better than. There is no doubt that ODU is the better than Coastal Carolina, the Big South Conference team that they play against today.
It’s actually surprising that Old Dominion is not better than they are. Old Dominion is in Norfolk, Virginia, just one of the large cities in the talented rich area of Hampton Roads. There is major talent in the area.
Under head Coach Blaine Taylor, Old Dominion is a team that is always going to do 2 things well. Number 1 is rebound. He only recruits players that can rebound from their position. It doesn’t matter if your a guard, he expects you to crash the offensive and defensive boards. So it’s not surprising to see ODU ranked 8th in the country in total rebounds.
The other thing that Old Dominion does extremely well is play defense. They come with a intense defensive game plan each and every game. It’s going to be exactly what makes this game a blowout today. Old Dominion hold opponents to just 40% shooting this year 32nd in the country, they also allowed just 61.6 ppg, 40th best in the nation. This will always be a defensive team. Coastal Carolina hasn’t seen a defense this tough all year, and they simply won’t be able to handle it.
Senior Guard Kent Bazemore is 6’6, and going to be the most athletic guy on the floor. He is going to be a match up problem for Coastal Carolina on the offensive side of the board. On the defensive side of things, Bazemore was the defensive player of the year in the CAA. He is going to the be the player to watch, but even if he doesn’t have the greatest game, ODU still wins and covers in this one.
This is a home game for ODU. This is a team they are much better than.
