6 Sep 2010Bryan Albin’s College Football Game of the Week
1. # 3 BOISE STATE (+1.5, -110) @ # 10 VIRGINIA TECH (-1.5, -110)
Without a doubt, tonight’s labor day showdown is the biggest game of week 1. With 21 starters returning from a team that went 13-0 and won the Fiesta Bowl a year ago, Boise State is finally starting he year high enough in the polls that another undefeated season would probably put the Broncos into the National Championship game. On the other side, Virginia Tech may have its best offense since Michael Vick quarterbacked the Hokies in 1999. This game is being played in Washington, D.C. which means that it is essentially a road game for Boise. A high profile win like this is necessary for the Broncos to make it to the BCS Title game.
STRENGTH AGAINST STRENGTH
Virginia Tech comes into this game with a highly touted running game. A year ago RB Williams ran for over 1,500 yards as a Freshman. This year he is a dark horse Heisman candidate. However, the rushing attack could be a 2-headed monster, as last year’s projected starter Darren Evans is returning form an injury. Unfortunately for these two, their season’s might get off to a rough start. People all talk about the strength of the Boise offense, but people seem to forget how stifling the Boise State run defense was in big games a year ago. Neither TCU or Oregon were able to get 40 rushing yards against the Broncos. This is an unbelievable statistic. If Boise can have a similar game to those two defensively, I can’t imagine that Virginia Tech will win.
